Week Four
Based on the events from Chernobyl in Ukraine. Historical Fiction.
During the last years of the cold war many nuclear power
plants were built around the country of Sobeytl, with one in particular being
the biggest located in the city of Kryntsy. The government was fond of using the Kryntsy
power plant to produce most of its nuclear weapons and energy but the
inhabitants of the city didn’t find it useful, in fact, they noticed that the
plant was making them experience fatigue and in many other cases, sickness. One
night, there was a power surge that caused one of the vessel reactors to
overheat and when an emergency shut down was performed a larger spike made most
reactors of the plant to rupture the most dangerous one being one of the vessel
reactors. The outcome: a series of
explosions that lead to the whole inside of the plant to expose the graphite
reactor to ignite the whole plant and just like this, a massive explosion.
The Sobeyltical government only had interest in the
constructions of power plants but, the quicker, the better; as a result,
planning wasn’t something well thought. Most of the plants were built in the
eastern part of the country some of them next to rivers and the one in Kryntsy
wasn’t an exception. The residues of the
nuclear fallout spread very quickly through the stream of different rivers
making the disaster to reach a 100km radius. As a result, many people died and
others were asked to leave the east side of the country as soon as possible,
the government tried to hide this and made a huge wall dividing the country in
two, leading the people exposed to radiation to be killed without mercy before
reaching safety.
Thirty years after the fallout, people managed to remain
alive and built a new society detached from the past government. The climate here was very cold, it spends 9
months of winter with occasional snowstorms and then other 3 with a really dim
summer. Due radiation humans, fauna, and flora fell into five categories that
measured the amounts of mutation in each one of them. From level one being the
average person to level five that consisted in unidentified beings, in this
case, very dangerous monsters that had no capacity of reasoning.
In some rare cases a 6th level of mutation was
found, these were humans that with radiation were able to gain characteristics
that helped them survive in this new environment, depending on how their bodies
reacted to radiation, they would gain super enhancements. For example: a child
able to see at a very large distance almost like a scope with the ability to
see at night; a man with bones as strong as steel, a woman able to stand in the
cold and survive without the need of clothes, etc.
Some cities became
city –states, others formed alliances, others were never heard from again,
presumably full of mutants, yet the government would throw flyers to the
eastern villagers asking them to wipe out all the “bad” mutants, which were
from category 3-6. They would be hired and paid and promised to get out after
getting a certain quota of mutants out, the only downfall was, the government
used the civilians to clean up the mess they didn’t want to or couldn’t clean
themselves.
